Nursing The Wild

Promoting Nature Recovery Through Veterinary Nursing.

Lauren is a registered veterinary nurse of over 12 years and has exclusively worked with wildlife and zoo species since 2022. Lauren is passionate about wild animal welfare and nature recovery. Traditionally, conservation and nature recovery has been led by biologists, ecologists and many other disciplines including vets, however Lauren wants to promote the role of the veterinary nurse in this field.

Zoo’s, wildlife rehab facilities, rewilding and translocation projects all involve the permanent or temporary captivity of wild animals whose welfare needs monitoring. This is where RVN’s come in, we are appropriately skilled to monitor the ongoing health status of these animals especially in the event of sickness, injury and during times of veterinary treatment.

Veterinary nurse skills can be utilised outside of traditional roles, training rehabbers, keepers, biologists and members of other disciplines.

Nurses are perfectly qualifed and placed to undertake work realting to species conservation, whether that’s in the field or in captive settings. Field anaesthesia monitoring or in the rehab centre, nurses bring a vast array of skills to the table.

“To positively impact the lives of the animals I meet, and hopefully even the ones I don’t, by utilising and sharing the skills I have as a proud veterinary nurse and biologist.”
